Conformance

The standard we work to.

We are working towards WCAG 2.1 Level AA, the benchmark most commonly referenced in US accessibility guidance. We treat it as an ongoing job rather than a box to tick, and we check accessibility as part of every redesign rather than auditing after the fact.

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (opens in a new tab) set out what designers and developers have to do so that people with disabilities can use a website. They define three levels of conformance, and each level includes the one below it.

  • Level AA Our target

What we have done

Six things we check on every page.

Accessibility is part of the build, not an audit afterwards.

Contrast

Body text is set at a contrast ratio that comfortably passes AA, and colour is never the only way information is conveyed.

Keyboard

Every interactive element can be reached and operated with a keyboard, and keyboard focus is visible on both light and dark backgrounds.

Structure

Navigation groups are marked up as landmarks, and headings follow a real document structure instead of being used for visual sizing.

Images

Images that carry meaning have alternative text; decorative images are hidden from screen readers.

Reflow

Layouts reflow to narrow screens and to zoomed text without horizontal scrolling.

Motion

Animation is kept small and short, and is switched off entirely for anyone whose system asks for reduced motion.

Known limitations

What we cannot control.

We would rather tell you than let you find out.

  • Embedded contentContent embedded from other services, such as video players and maps, is outside our control and may not meet the same standard.
Tell us

If something blocks you, tell us.

If any part of this site is hard to use, we want to hear about it. Tell us the page and what went wrong, and we will fix it or find you another way to get what you needed.
