When Does Existing Paver Sealer Need to Be Stripped?

Stripping paver sealer is labor-intensive and requires careful chemical, equipment and waste-management planning. It should be recommended because the existing coating condition demands it—not simply because the pavers are due for maintenance.

Conditions that may require stripping

  • Peeling, delamination or widespread loss of adhesion.
  • White or cloudy film that cannot be corrected through the appropriate diagnostic procedure.
  • An incompatible coating beneath the proposed new system.
  • Excessive or uneven film buildup from repeated recoating.
  • Multiple unknown coatings or spot repairs that prevent a uniform result.
  • Contamination trapped beneath the existing film.

When stripping may not be necessary

A sound, clean and compatible coating may be suitable for a controlled maintenance recoat after preparation and testing. The existing film must be securely bonded and the new system must demonstrate acceptable adhesion and appearance in a representative test patch.

Diagnose before selecting a stripper

Determine whether the coating is thermoplastic or thermoset, how many layers are present and what condition exists beneath the film. A xylene test can help screen coating behavior, but a test patch with the proposed removal system is still necessary.

Removal requires a complete plan

  1. Review the stripper label, safety data sheet and required protective equipment.
  2. Protect people, plants, buildings, pool systems and adjacent coatings.
  3. Test dwell time and removal technique in a small representative area.
  4. Prevent the stripper from drying on the surface unless the product instructions specifically allow it.
  5. Collect and manage coating residue and wash water according to applicable requirements.
  6. Neutralize or rinse as directed and confirm that residue has been removed.
  7. Allow the surface to dry and re-evaluate before resealing.

Do not treat stripping as surface cleaning

Coating removal exposes underlying variations that were previously hidden. The project may require multiple passes, detailed edge work, renewed joint sand and additional drying time. Contractors should price and schedule it as restoration work.

A successful stripping project ends with a stable, clean and compatible surface—not simply with the visible coating softened.
