1K vs. 2K Paver Sealers: What Professional Contractors Need to Know

The terms 1K and 2K describe how a coating system is supplied and prepared. A 1K sealer is a single-component product that does not require a separate activator. A 2K sealer has two components that must be combined correctly before dilution and application.

One system is not automatically better for every project. Contractors should understand the workflow and performance expectations of each before selecting a product.

What is a 1K paver sealer?

A 1K sealer arrives ready for the prescribed dilution and application procedure. Eliminating a separate activator simplifies staging, reduces mixing steps and avoids errors involving an incorrect Part A-to-Part B ratio.

Seal ’n Lock’s 1K systems are designed for efficient professional application. For the PRO 1K systems, the standard Seal ’n Lock dilution is 1:1 with water for the flood and finish coats unless current product instructions state otherwise.

What is a 2K paver sealer?

A 2K system uses Part A and Part B. The components must be measured and mixed at the specified ratio before water is introduced. Once combined, the concentrated system can sustain the heavier flood-coat dilution used in the Seal ’n Lock process while leaving sufficient polymer and plastic solids to stabilize the joints and contribute to the finished film.

For Seal ’n Lock 2K systems, the typical flood-coat dilution is 3 parts water to 1 part fully mixed sealer. Finish coats are typically diluted 1:1. Always follow the current product label and technical data sheet.

Compare the contractor workflow

  • 1K: fewer measuring and mixing steps, with no separate activation.
  • 2K: requires accurate component mixing before dilution.
  • 1K: useful when simplified jobsite handling and repeatability are priorities.
  • 2K: suited to contractors trained to manage component ratios, mixing sequence and working time.

Finish and surface condition still matter

The number of components does not determine whether a surface is ready to seal. Existing coating compatibility, moisture, porosity, temperature, preparation and application control remain essential for both systems.

PRO High-Gloss 1K provides a high-gloss option without a separate activator. PRO Max Gloss 2K is the PRO Series option for projects where maximum gloss is the goal. A jobsite sample is the best way to confirm how either finish will appear on the actual pavers.

Choose the system your crew can apply consistently

The right choice is the system that matches the finish objective, substrate and crew workflow. Training, measurement and final inspection matter more than simply choosing 1K or 2K. A properly selected and controlled system helps make application easier, faster, cleaner and more reliable.
