Paver sealing around a pool requires special attention because the surface is repeatedly exposed to water, foot traffic, cleaning products, sunscreen, organic contamination and—in saltwater pools—salt residue.
Begin with drainage and moisture
Water must be able to move away from the surface. Identify low spots, deck drains, expansion joints and locations where irrigation or pool overflow keeps the pavers wet. Do not seal over failed moisture readings.
Prepare for pool-area contamination
Remove oils, organic growth, mineral deposits, cleaning residue and loose joint material. Rinse thoroughly while preventing wash water and chemicals from entering the pool whenever practical. Protect coping, waterline tile, equipment and adjacent finishes.
Consider slip resistance
Any wet walking surface deserves careful slip-resistance planning. Texture, coating build, water, footwear and contamination all affect traction. When specified, PRO-Traction should be incorporated into the final coat by the approved mix-in or distribution method.
A slip-resistant additive can contribute to surface texture, but it does not make every wet surface slip-proof. Ongoing cleaning and maintenance remain necessary.
Control coating build
Heavy, glossy films can change the feel of a textured surface. Use the selected product at the specified dilution and application rate, and evaluate a wet and dry test area before completing the deck.
Address salt and chemical exposure
Saltwater systems do not eliminate the need for maintenance. Splash-out and evaporation can leave residue on the surface. Pool chemicals should be handled according to the pool professional’s instructions, and concentrated spills should be rinsed promptly when safe and appropriate.
Set realistic maintenance expectations
- Keep the deck clean and free of organic buildup.
- Rinse accumulated residue before it becomes difficult to remove.
- Inspect high-traffic and continuously wet areas regularly.
- Avoid harsh or incompatible cleaning chemicals.
- Follow cure and traffic restrictions after sealing.
